An object’s journey begins with a pen’s imaginative strokes, and culminates as it materialises at the warmth of our fingertips. ASA recently had the privilege of crafting tailor-made porcelain tiles for the latest Hong Kong boutique of an international fragrance and skincare brand. Follow us on this odyssey of translating abstract design language into tangible textures.
The meticulous tile design features fine geometric lines as minute as 1.2 mm at its narrowest point. Yet raw clay, in the blazing heat of the kiln at 1,280°C, contracts naturally and unpredictably. To faithfully capture these crisp lines in physical form, our professional team underwent painstaking rounds of trial firings and mould refinements. We understood that achieving this millimetre-level precision in our tiles was paramount to the design vision and a seamless installation.
Unlike the inflexible uniformity of mass production, each piece of tile for this project was glazed individually by hand. As kiln temperatures subtly shifted, the green glaze drifted towards the tile edges, resulting in layered, three-dimensional colours. No two tiles are the same - each carries its own living nuance born from the fire. When applied across countertops, cabinets, and drawers, they interact with the lights to lend the space a vibrant, lively rhythm.
Commercial projects often move at a rapid pace. Delivering artisanal refinement within a tight time frame requires absolute transparency and trust between ASA and the design team. Throughout production, updates on glaze trials and mould adjustments were shared in real time. By aligning on every minutia before firing, potential issues were efficiently resolved in advance. The final goods were delivered safely and on schedule thanks to our shared unwavering commitment.
